Healthy Ultimate Balanced Bowl Recipe

Healthy Ultimate Balanced Bowl Recipe

This is a healthy, filling and nutrient-rich meal made with lean protein, vegetables, whole grains and a light homemade dressing. It is designed to be satisfying without relying on heavy sauces, excessive oil or processed ingredients.

Ingredients

For the main bowl

1 cup cooked brown rice or cooked quinoa

120–150 g grilled chicken breast, cut into small pieces

1 cup cucumber, chopped

1 cup tomatoes, chopped

1/2 cup carrots, thinly sliced

1/2 cup bell pepper, chopped

1/2 cup lettuce or cabbage, finely shredded

1/4 cup sweet corn

2 tablespoons plain yogurt

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 small garlic clove, finely minced

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon roasted cumin powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

Fresh coriander or parsley, finely chopped

For the light dressing

3 tablespoons plain yogurt

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon mustard

1 small garlic clove, finely minced

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

A small pinch of salt

1/4 teaspoon roasted cumin powder

1–2 teaspoons water, as needed

Optional additions

A small amount of avocado

A few chickpeas

A boiled egg

A small amount of low-fat cheese

Fresh mint

Chopped green onion

A little chili powder if you like spicy food

Preparation

Start by preparing the chicken.

Place the chicken pieces in a bowl. Add lemon juice, black pepper, paprika, roasted cumin powder, oregano and a small amount of salt. Mix everything thoroughly so the seasoning coats the chicken evenly.

Allow the chicken to sit for around 10–15 minutes while you prepare the vegetables.

Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. You can use a very small amount of cooking oil if needed, or cook the chicken in a good non-stick pan without much oil.

Place the chicken in the pan and cook until it is completely cooked through. Turn the pieces occasionally so they cook evenly on all sides.

The chicken should be fully cooked in the center and should not remain raw or pink. Once cooked, remove it from the pan and let it rest for a few minutes before cutting it into smaller pieces.

Now prepare the vegetables.

Wash the cucumber, tomatoes, carrots, bell pepper and lettuce thoroughly.

Chop the cucumber and tomatoes into bite-sized pieces.

Slice the carrots thinly so they are easy to eat.

Cut the bell pepper into small pieces.

Finely shred the lettuce or cabbage.

Add all the vegetables to a large mixing bowl.

Add the sweet corn and mix gently.

Now prepare the yogurt dressing.

Take three tablespoons of plain yogurt in a small bowl.

Add one tablespoon of lemon juice, one teaspoon of mustard, minced garlic, black pepper, a small pinch of salt and roasted cumin powder.

Mix everything until the dressing becomes smooth.

If the dressing is too thick, add one or two teaspoons of water and mix again.

Taste the dressing and adjust the seasoning according to your preference.

Now assemble the bowl.

Place the cooked brown rice or quinoa at the bottom of a large bowl.

Add the shredded lettuce or cabbage.

Add cucumber, tomatoes, carrots and bell pepper.

Add sweet corn.

Place the grilled chicken on top.

Add the yogurt dressing over the bowl.

Finish with fresh coriander or parsley and a little fresh lemon juice.

Mix everything together just before eating so the dressing spreads throughout the bowl.

How to Make It More Filling

If you are hungry or need a larger meal, do not simply try to make the portion smaller. Add nutritious foods such as chickpeas, beans, extra vegetables, yogurt, an egg or a little more rice.

The combination of protein, carbohydrates, vegetables and healthy fats makes the meal more balanced and helps provide steady energy.

For example, you can add a small serving of chickpeas for extra protein and fiber.

You can also add a boiled egg.

If you enjoy avocado, a small amount can provide healthy fats and make the meal creamier.

Alternative Version

You can also make this recipe with grilled fish instead of chicken.

Season the fish with lemon juice, black pepper, paprika, garlic and a small amount of salt.

Cook it thoroughly in a non-stick pan and place it over the rice and vegetables.

Another option is to use beans or chickpeas instead of meat. This makes the bowl vegetarian while still providing protein and fiber.

Serving Suggestion

Serve the bowl immediately after adding the dressing.

For extra freshness, add lemon juice just before eating.

You can also serve it with plain yogurt on the side.

For a refreshing drink, have water with lemon or plain chilled water rather than a sugary drink.

Important Note

Since you’re still growing, it is better to focus on healthy, balanced and nutritious meals rather than trying to eat as few calories as possible. Your body needs enough energy, protein, vitamins and minerals for growth, school and everyday activities.
